If you travel along the magnificent sandy coast from Benghazi eastward, you suddenly come upon a city of Spartan origin on the lower spurs of the Green mountains.

Teuchira or (Arsinoe) as it was called in later history, grew and prospered as a Greek roman settlement, and went on to become one of the most important Byzantine garrisons in Cyrenaica.

In 96 B.C. Teuchira became under the Roman domination, as was the case with the other Romans cities of Libya, it flourished during the 1st and 2nd century A.D. The general decline of the Roman influence, lead to disturbance and revolt.

In Byzantine era the defense of the city were strengthen to resist the attacks by various Libyan tribes from the south and west. The inland areas of Libya in those times were more prosperous than the coastal cities, which encouraged the various tribes to attack them. However, the fortresses and defensive lines to protect Teuchira and other coastal areas, stopped attacks, especially during the reign of Emperor Justinian (565-627 A.D. The tribe of Luata dominated the whole Cyrenaica, then on 643 A.D the whole region of eastern Libya became a part of the Great Islamic Nation, except Teuchira that felt to Moslem's advent in 644-645 AD
