Further to the south, the horizon melts away into the immense desert of dunes and mirages. Any explorer will be thrilled by the breath-taking charm of the fabulous scenery.

The great Libyan Sahara Desert is one of the last true wilderness environments on the planet earth.

In the late 19th century, when explorers first began to cross the Sahara, no journey was considered more hazardous. Today with the benefit of modern vehicles, it is comparatively safe but just as exciting, and destinations which used to take days can now be reached in hours.

The oasis in the desert is a place of calmness and tranquility, where you can enjoy water abundance, shadow and palm trees beauty in gorgeous and peaceful surrounding. They are the islands of the Great Sea of Sand.

You can stay at the beautiful oasis town of Ghadames (the southern most out post of the Roman Times), famed for its unique Islamic desert architecture and social structure, beyond which the dunes stretch for thousands of square miles.

Following the ancient Saharan trade route down to Ghat (a Tuareg city deep in the Libyan south), discover and explore the stunning landscapes of the Acacus-Tadrarat Mountains, where hidden in the wrinkled folds of the valleys and the wadis lies one of most extraordinary concentrations of pre-historic cave paintings in the world.

Trekking continues overland to Germa, site of the capital of the ancient Libyan inhabitants, where the earliest finds date back to the first millennium B.C.

The Garamantes were famous as warriors of swift chariots drawn by 4 horses, and masters of desert routes.

Heading north across a sand sea, you can take the opportunity to camp at the oasis of Gabroun. Though the original occupants, the Dawada -other wise known as the Warm Eaters- have now moved on, the area has been beautifully restored to accommodate travelers.

The Libyan desert is a wonderful and delightful world, full of character uniqueness, culture, heritage and simple pleasure.... The keynotes of life in the Sahara are vastness, variety and adventure.
